After much research, and a failed attempt that was erased by a heatwave in January, we have a nice little rink in the backyard.
I (Aaron here) messed around with vapour barrier (a cheaper alternative) only to find out that Tuck tape isn't waterproof - the liner leaked and getting the rink to freeze was impossible.
After the heatwave where every spec of snow and ice had melted, I took the opportunity to buy a 50X30 foot tarp, and use that instead. I did keep the (2X10 board) frame, so it wasn't a complete loss. After adding the water, two days later (-13C)...instant rink.
Add some lights and some kids and here is what you get!

Backyard rinks are the best. I miss them.
That looks like a beauty rink. I miss skating.
Thanks for the fun skate! Sorry I ripped a hole in your rink.
My shins are sore for the first time in 2 years!
Great rink Clem...thanks for a funfilled afternoon.
Great job Aaron. That brings back memories of my youth, only our rink was 3 fields away and getting home was torture. Sometimes we crawled as our feet were so cold but it was so much fun. Your children will remember your efforts for years to come.
Comment for Marilyn: Wow, skating was a lot of effort in those days, eh? And I bet you had to "crawl" home backwards too right? :-)
